What happens when a GIF becomes a JPG
A GIF can be animated; a JPG can't. Converting takes the first frame of the GIF and saves it as a still image. If the GIF isn't animated, you simply get the whole picture.
GIF is limited to 256 colours, so photos stored as GIF often look banded. The JPG keeps exactly the colours the GIF had; it can't restore the ones that were lost. It is usually much smaller, though, and accepted everywhere photos are.
GIF transparency is either fully on or fully off. Since JPG has none, transparent pixels are filled with a colour you choose, white by default.

Converting formats, answered
Which frame of an animated GIF is used?
The first frame. The formats on this page are for still images.
Will the JPG look better than the GIF?
No. It keeps the GIF's colours exactly, including any banding from GIF's 256-colour limit. It will usually be smaller and more widely accepted.
What happens to transparent parts?
They're filled with a solid colour, white by default, because JPG can't store transparency. Convert to PNG to keep it.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
