How did this tool do?

What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

PNG is lossless: once your image is a PNG, saving it again doesn't wear it down. That makes it the right container for a picture you're going to edit repeatedly, and some design tools and upload forms only accept PNG.

What it can't do is bring back detail. The JPG already threw some away when it was first saved, and converting keeps the image exactly as it is now, artefacts included. The PNG will also be larger, often several times the size of the JPG, because PNG stores every pixel rather than an approximation of them.

There's no transparency to gain either: a JPG has none, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. If you need a see-through background, remove it first, then save as PNG.

Where you'll meet it

  • An upload that only takes PNG

Some design tools, sticker makers and form builders reject JPG outright.

  • Editing in several passes

Every JPG save loses a little more; a PNG can be saved as often as you like.

  • Screenshots saved as JPG

Keep the result from getting any worse while you annotate or crop it.

Converting formats, answered

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it is, including any compression artefacts. It only stops further loss from later saves.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores the image losslessly, pixel by pixel. JPG's small size comes from discarding detail, which PNG doesn't do. ImgKit runs OxiPNG on the result to keep it as small as a lossless file can be.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPGs have no transparency, so there's nothing to carry over. Use the background remover first if you need a cut-out.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
