Questions, answered
Which format should I use?
JPG for photos you need to share or upload anywhere, PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality, WebP for websites because the files are smaller at the same quality, and AVIF for the smallest files where it's supported.
Will transparency survive?
Converting to PNG, WebP or AVIF keeps transparency. JPG can't store it, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose — white by default.
What happens to animated GIFs?
The first frame is converted. The formats here are for still images.
Why does AVIF take longer?
Most browsers can't create AVIF on their own, so ImgKit loads an AVIF encoder the first time you pick it and runs it on your device. It's slower than JPG or WebP, but the files are usually the smallest.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
