How did this tool do?

What changes when a PNG becomes a JPG

For photographs, JPG is dramatically smaller than PNG, often a fifth of the size or less, and every app, phone and upload form accepts it. That's why a PNG photo exported from a phone or an AI image generator is usually worth converting before you send it anywhere.

Two things change. JPG can't store transparency, so any see-through areas are filled with a colour you choose, white by default. And JPG is lossy: it saves space by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss. At the default quality of 90 that's invisible on photos.

Where JPG struggles is sharp edges: screenshots, text, logos and flat-colour graphics pick up faint blotches around the lines. For those, keep the PNG or convert to WebP instead.

Where you'll meet it

  • Photos saved as PNG

Phone screenshots of photos and AI-generated images are often multi-megabyte PNGs.

  • Upload size limits

Forms that cap uploads at a few hundred KB usually accept JPG, and a JPG fits.

  • Email attachments

A set of PNG photos can shrink to a fraction of the size as JPGs.

Converting formats, answered

What happens to a transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is the default; you can pick black or any colour before converting.

Will my PNG lose quality as a JPG?

A little, because JPG is lossy, but at quality 90 you won't see it on photos. Text and sharp-edged graphics show it first, so keep those as PNG.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photos, typically 70–90% smaller. For flat graphics with few colours the saving is smaller, and a well-optimised PNG can even beat the JPG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
