Reaching an exact size in kilobytes
Upload limits are written in kilobytes, but most editors only offer a quality percentage — so people save, check the size, adjust, and save again. This page removes the guesswork: type the number the form allows and the encoder works down to it, then tells you the quality it used.
Two things decide whether a photo can reach a small size while still looking good. Quality is the obvious one. Dimensions matter more: a 3000-pixel-wide photo has fifteen times the pixels of a 780-pixel one, and every pixel costs bytes. If a file won't reach your limit at an acceptable quality, resize it first.
Format matters too. Forms that say "image" often accept JPG only, and JPG is the right choice for a photograph anyway — PNG is built for flat colour and line art, and makes photographs considerably larger at the same visual quality.
Nothing is uploaded. The file is read from your device, re-encoded in memory and saved back, which matters when the photo is attached to an identity document.

How do I reduce an image to a specific size in KB?
Drop the image, switch to Target size if it isn't already selected, and type the number of kilobytes. Each file comes back just under that, with the quality it needed shown on the row.
What if the file won't reach the size I need?
That means the image has more pixels than the target can carry. Resize it — to the dimensions your form asks for, or to about 1200 px on the longest side for the web — and compress again.
Does reducing KB change the dimensions?
Not normally. Quality is lowered first; the image is only scaled down if the target can't be reached any other way, and the file row tells you when that happened.
Which format should I choose?
JPG for forms and email, because it opens everywhere and compresses photographs efficiently, which is why this page starts on JPG. WebP for your own website, where it reaches the same quality in a smaller file.
Can I link to a specific size?
Yes. Add the size to the address, such as imgkit.xyz/reduce-image-size-in-kb?size=28kb, and the page opens already set to 28 KB. MB works too (?size=1.5mb). Changing the size here updates the address, so you can bookmark it or send it to someone filling in the same form.
Is anything uploaded?
