How did this tool do?

Why WebP images need converting to JPG

Websites serve WebP because it's small, so when you right-click and save an image you often get a .webp file. Browsers show it fine, but older photo editors, some print services and plenty of upload forms don't accept it. JPG opens everywhere.

If the WebP has transparency, the JPG can't keep it: see-through areas are filled with a colour you choose, white by default. If that matters, convert to PNG instead.

Both formats are lossy, so there's a small re-encoding cost. At quality 90 it isn't visible, and the JPG will usually be a little larger than the WebP it came from. That's the price of compatibility.

Where you'll meet it

  • Images saved from websites

Turn a downloaded .webp into a file any app will open.

  • Upload forms that reject WebP

Job sites, government portals and marketplaces often accept only JPG or PNG.

  • Printing

Many print shops and photo kiosks still expect JPG.

Converting formats, answered

Why won't my WebP file open?

Older software and some upload forms predate WebP and don't recognise it. Converting to JPG is the reliable fix.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually a little. WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so matching its quality takes a few more bytes.

What if the WebP has a transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so it's filled with a solid colour you pick. Convert to PNG instead to keep it.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
