Why AVIF files sometimes need to be JPGs
AVIF produces some of the smallest image files around, so more websites and phones are using it. Support outside the browser is still patchy: older versions of Windows, many photo editors and most upload forms don't accept it yet. JPG works everywhere.
The JPG will be larger than the AVIF, often considerably, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. That's expected; you're trading size for compatibility.
If the AVIF has transparency, JPG can't store it and fills those areas with the colour you choose. Convert to PNG to keep it.

Converting formats, answered
Why can't I open an AVIF file?
AVIF is newer than most software. Browsers display it, but many editors, older operating systems and upload forms don't. Converting to JPG solves that.
Why is the JPG so much bigger?
AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats; JPG is from 1992. Matching the AVIF's quality in JPG takes more bytes.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
Only slightly, since the image is re-encoded. At quality 90 the difference isn't visible.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
