Why convert PNGs to WebP

PNG is the usual choice for images with transparency: logos, icons, product cut-outs. It's also heavy. WebP stores transparency too, so a PNG cut-out can become a WebP that looks the same on the page at a fraction of the size.

The saving is largest on photographic PNGs, such as product shots with the background removed, where WebP's lossy compression does the most work. For small flat logos the difference is smaller, and a well-optimised PNG can come close.

At normal quality settings the WebP is lossy. That's fine for anything displayed on a page, but if you need a pixel-exact master to edit later, keep the PNG alongside it.

Where you'll meet it

  • Product cut-outs

Background-removed product photos keep their transparency and lose most of their weight.

  • Logos and icons on a site

Smaller files, same transparent edges on any background colour.

  • Large hero images

PNG hero banners are often the heaviest file on a page.

Converting formats, answered

Does WebP keep the transparent background?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so see-through areas stay see-through. Only JPG needs a fill colour.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

It depends on the image. Photographic PNGs usually shrink the most, often by well over half. Simple flat graphics shrink less.

Should I delete the PNG afterwards?

Keep it if you'll edit the image again. The WebP is for display; the PNG is the lossless master.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device and it keeps working with your connection off.
