Why 1080 × 1080?
It's the largest square Instagram displays without resampling, and it works everywhere else a square is expected — LinkedIn posts, profile pictures, album art.
What happens to a photo that isn't square?
Crop to fill trims the long edges, which suits most photos. Fit inside keeps the whole image and leaves space around it — the social resizers can fill that space with a blurred copy of the photo.
