Grid (columns × rows)

Files are numbered left to right, top to bottom, and each name also says when to post it: “post-01” goes up first, so tile 1 lands top left of your grid.

How did this tool do?

Splitting a picture into a grid of tiles

Pick columns × rows and the picture is cut into equal tiles, each saved as its own file in one ZIP. 3 × 3 makes the nine-post giant picture on an Instagram profile; 3 × 1 turns a panorama into a carousel that swipes seamlessly; 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 suit puzzles and printouts on several sheets.

With Crop to square tiles on, the picture is trimmed around the centre to the grid's shape first, so every tile is a perfect square, which is what a profile grid needs. Switch it off to keep the whole picture, with tiles in the picture's own proportions. Tile edges are shared exactly, so nothing is lost or doubled where they meet.

Files are numbered in reading order, left to right and top to bottom, and each name also says when to post it. Instagram shows the newest post first in the top-left corner, so the last tile has to go up first; “post-01” is always the one to upload first.

Where you'll meet it

  • Instagram profile grids

One big picture across 3, 6 or 9 posts.

  • Panorama carousels

A wide photo that swipes seamlessly across slides.

  • Large prints

Split a poster across several sheets of paper.

How to use it

  1. 01Drop your image.
  2. 02Pick a grid: 3 × 3 for a profile grid, 1 × 3 for a panorama carousel.
  3. 03Download the ZIP. Files are numbered in the order to post them.

Splitting images, answered

In what order do I post the tiles on Instagram?

Instagram shows the newest post first, top left. Post the files in reverse: the highest number first and tile 1 last. The file names say which is which.

Does it cut off part of my picture?

If the picture doesn't divide evenly, “Crop to square tiles” trims the edges so every tile is square; switch it off to keep the whole image in rectangular tiles.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
