A YouTube thumbnail is 1280 × 720, a 16:9 frame that matches the video player. Anything else gets letterboxed or cropped. The bottom-right corner is covered by the video's length, so keep text and faces out of it.
The channel banner is the one that trips most people up. You upload it at 2560 × 1440, but only the centre 1546 × 423 is shown on every device: TVs show the whole image, desktops a wide strip, phones even less. Put your channel name and any text inside that central strip, and treat the rest as background.
Shorts covers are vertical, 1080 × 1920, and the profile picture is an 800 × 800 square shown as a circle, so keep a face or logo in the middle.
