LinkedIn uses a different shape almost everywhere an image appears. A post can be landscape (1200 × 627, the shape of a link preview), square (1080 × 1080) or portrait (1080 × 1350). The profile banner is a very wide 1584 × 396, a company page cover is wider still at 1128 × 191, and the profile photo is a 400 × 400 square shown as a circle.
Uploading the wrong shape is what causes the awkward results: LinkedIn crops it for you, often cutting off the top of a head or the end of a line of text. Resizing to the exact size first means you decide what stays in the frame, not the upload screen.
Two layouts catch people out. On the banner, your profile photo sits over the left-hand side, so a name or logo placed there gets covered; keep it to the right. And on phones, a portrait post takes up the most space in the feed, so it's the one to use when you want a post to be noticed.
If a photo doesn't fit the shape you need, choose Fit whole photo instead of Crop to fill. The whole image is kept and placed on a blurred copy of itself, or on a colour you pick, at exactly the size LinkedIn expects.
