TikTok is built around a full-screen vertical frame of 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 ratio that fills a phone screen. Video covers and photo posts both use it. A photo in any other shape shows up with bars or gets cropped by the app, so resizing first means you choose what stays in view.
Not all of that frame is visible. The caption, username and sound sit over the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons run down the right edge. Keep faces and any text in the centre and upper middle of the image; the tip under the settings shows the same thing as you work.
Most photos are landscape or 4:3, far wider than 9:16, so cropping to fill cuts off a lot. Fit whole photo keeps the entire image and places it on a blurred copy of itself, or on a colour you pick, at exactly 1080 × 1920. The profile picture is a 200 × 200 square shown as a circle, so keep faces centred with a little space around them.
