Making one colour transparent, and when to use AI instead
This tool removes one colour, not a subject. It finds the background colour from the image's corners, or you click the preview to pick it, and every pixel close to that colour becomes see-through. That makes it quick and exact on plain backgrounds: a logo on white, a signature on paper, a product on a studio backdrop, or a green screen.
Tolerance sets how close a colour has to be to count as background: raise it for a background with shadows or uneven lighting, lower it if parts of the subject start to vanish. Only from the edges keeps a matching colour inside the subject, like the white of an eye or the paper inside a letter O, by removing only background that connects to the border. Edge smoothing softens the outline so it doesn't look jagged on a new background.
For a photo with a busy background, such as a person outdoors, one colour can't separate them. Use the Remove background tool instead: an AI model finds the subject, and it also runs on your device. Results here are saved as PNG, which keeps transparency everywhere; JPG can't store it at all.

Does this work on any photo?
It works best on a plain, even background such as a logo on white, a signature on paper, or a product on a studio backdrop. For busy backgrounds, use Remove background, which finds the subject with an AI model on your device.
Why did parts of my subject disappear?
They're close to the background colour. Keep “Only from the edges” on and lower the tolerance.
Why is the file saved as PNG?
JPG can't store transparency. PNG, WebP and AVIF can — Auto picks PNG, which works everywhere.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device — not even for a moment.
