Blur the background of a photo
To blur the background of a photo, drop it here. The AI finds the subject on your device, keeps it sharp and blurs everything behind it.
What's in the picture
Best for people; quick on any device.
Downloads once on first use, then runs offline. Your images are never uploaded.
Change the blur after a run and run again: the cut-out is kept, so it redraws in a moment.
How did this tool do?
A portrait-mode blur, without a portrait-mode camera
Phones fake a shallow depth of field with depth sensors and software. This page does the software half: an AI model finds the subject, the rest of the photo is blurred, and the subject is laid back on top, sharp. The model is the same one the background remover uses, and it runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.
People are the default subject, with a small, quick model tuned for portraits. If your browser supports WebGPU (current Chrome and Edge), you can switch to Anything, a larger general model that also handles products, pets and objects. The first run downloads the model once; after that it is kept for next time and works offline.
The cut-out is remembered for each photo, so after one run you can change the blur strength and run again in a moment, without waiting for the AI. Save as JPG for the smallest file, since nothing in the result is transparent. For a backdrop that's a different colour or photo altogether, use replace background.
Where you'll meet it

Background blur, answered
Does it work on objects, not just people?
It works best on people. For products and pets, pick “Anything” where your browser supports it; it uses a general model that runs on WebGPU.
Can I change the blur after it's done?
Yes. The cut-out is kept, so moving the slider redraws the blur straight away without running the AI again.
Is the photo uploaded to an AI service?
No. The model runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
