A signature image is useful anywhere you sign things on a screen: a PDF contract, an email footer, a letter, an invoice or a form that asks you to upload one. Type your name and the eight styles update as you type, from flowing scripts like Great Vibes and Allura to quick, slanted hands like Mr Dafoe and Herr Von Muellerhoff that look more like an everyday signature.

Slant leans the letters forward or back, and the underline adds a light flourish under the name, which is how many people finish a signature. Black suits most documents, while blue looks like a pen on paper and makes it obvious the page was signed.

The signature is drawn large and then trimmed to the ink, with even padding, so it stays sharp when a form or a document shrinks it. The transparent PNG sits on any page colour without a white box around it, which is what you want for PDFs, Word documents and email signatures. The JPG comes on white, which is what most upload forms expect.

Whether a typed signature is accepted depends on who's asking. Many online forms just need an image of a signature. Exams, banks and government documents often want a scan of your real handwritten one, so check the instructions before you submit.
