Check the domain matches who the code claims to be from. Stickers placed over real codes on parking meters and posters are a common way to send people to fake payment pages.

Screenshots, photos and saved images all work. The code is read in this tab, so nothing is sent anywhere.

How did this tool do?

Reading a QR code from a screenshot or photo

Phone cameras read QR codes in front of them, but not codes inside a screenshot, an email attachment or a photo on your computer. Drop the image here and the code is found and decoded in this tab, with the browser's built-in barcode reader where there is one and jsQR, an open-source decoder, as a second opinion. Nothing is uploaded.

The image is scanned at a moderate size first, which is fast and suits most photos, then at full size for codes that are small in the frame. If nothing is found, crop closer to the code: the whole square, including the empty border around it, should be in the picture and in focus.

The result is shown before anything is opened. A link shows its domain separately, so you can check it is who the code claims to be from; Wi-Fi codes show the network name and password; email and phone codes show the address or number. Codes stuck over real ones on parking meters and posters are a common scam, which is why the link never opens on its own.

Reading QR codes, answered

Is it safe to open the link?

That's why the link is shown first instead of opened. Check the domain is what you expect; QR codes on parking meters and flyers are a common way to send people to fake payment pages.

It can't find the code — what can I try?

Crop the picture closer to the code, and make sure the whole square, including its quiet border, is in the image and in focus.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
