How did this tool do?

Picking exact colours, and which code to use

As you move over the image, a round loupe magnifies the 11 × 11 pixels around the pointer and outlines the one you're on. That matters because photos rarely have a single flat colour: JPG compression, shadows and edges mean neighbouring pixels differ slightly. Watch the loupe and click in the middle of an area rather than at its edge. Each colour you click goes into a list of up to 12, so you can compare them and copy them all as HEX.

HEX, RGB and HSL describe the same colour in different ways. HEX, such as #1f6feb, is what most design tools and CSS files expect. RGB gives the red, green and blue amounts from 0 to 255, which some apps ask for instead. HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, which makes it the easiest to adjust by hand: change only the lightness and you get a darker or lighter shade of exactly the same colour.

Alongside single picks, the tool finds the eight main colours of the whole image. It groups similar pixels, averages each group and orders them by how much of the picture they cover, ignoring transparent areas. Because they're averages, a palette colour may not match any single pixel exactly. The palette copies as CSS variables, ready to paste into a stylesheet.

Very large images are shown at up to 1600 px across, so on a huge photo a click reads the preview rather than one original pixel. For flat colours in a logo or screenshot that makes no difference. In Chrome and Edge, Pick from screen samples any pixel on your display, including other windows. Nothing is saved or exported: you copy the codes you need.

Where you'll meet it

  • Matching a brand colour

Get the exact HEX of a logo or screenshot for your CSS or design file.

  • A palette from a photo

Pull its eight main colours as ready-made CSS variables.

  • Lighter and darker shades

Take the HSL code and change only the lightness.

How to use it

  1. 01Drop an image or paste a screenshot.
  2. 02Move over the image — the loupe shows exact pixels — and click to pick.
  3. 03Copy the HEX, RGB or HSL code, or the whole palette as CSS variables.

Picking colours, answered

How is the palette chosen?

The image's colours are grouped by similarity and each group is averaged, so you get the colours that cover the most of the image.

Can I pick a colour from outside the image?

In Chrome and Edge, Pick from screen lets you sample any pixel on your display.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
